| Blasty Posts : 910 Albion Gaffer!! Scouting for 2 Centre Halves........... |
Baileys lost out on penalties to Birds Eye after an entertaining match. Baileys lined up missing Nelson, Freudenburg and Atkins from the previous weeks 6-1 win over Fiddler. It was Baileys who were quicker out of the blocks and Simpson should have put Baileys 1 up in the first minute after latching onto a Birds Eye mistake and then flashing wide of the post. Despite dominating possesion Baileys found themselves 1 down when Birds Eyes No4 rose unmarked at the back post to head home from a corner. In fact this was the only real threat offered in the entire half from Birds Eye. Baileys managed to equalise when a cross field pass found Simspon unmarked at the back post who steadied himself before firing home. Baileys should have gone in ahead but a combination of good keeping and poor finsihing meant the scores remained equal. The second half pretty much followed the same pattern as the first, Baileys dominating possesion and Birds Eye looking dangerous from set pieces, with Leightley having to be on his toes to save from under his bar in one instance. Baileys seemed not to have their shooting boots on as despite all the hard work creating chances no-one seemed to want to stick them in the net. Full time came and it was 1-1. Extra time began with manager Blasty being forced to make changes, the tiring Brett being replaced by Newens and the injured Vince being replaced by the gaffer himself. Again Baileys were on the front foot and eventually got a reward when O Donovan who had been switched from centre back to midfield for extra time broke clear and forced the ball home. Lone centre forward Blake then picked up a knock and was substituted leaving emergency centre forward Ramsey to plough a lone furrow up top. Birds Eye sensed that Baileys were struggling and pushed 3 up top and began to exert a bit of pressure without creating anything clear cut. Until 4 minutes from time they won another corner and again No4 rose unchallenged to plant a firm header into the bottom corner for 2-2. Baileys still had time to create a chance for the winner with Barry Ramsey picking up the ball at the back post from a corner and firing over the bar. So 2-2 at full time and it was penalties. Smith, Newens and Simpson all had there penalties saved, with only Ramsey and O Donovan scoring leaving Baileys gutted at a 3-2 penalty loss and wondering how they hadnt secured victory in normal or extra time. Another great performance from Baileys though considering the players missing and they can go into next weeks league game with Immingham Striders full of confidence in terms of the football being played. Thanks to Birds Eye for a tough but fair fought encounter. | |||
