Team Redstar were on the end of a giant killing act when they were humbled at home by Division 7 strugglers Lucarlys 2nds in the preliminary round of the Memorial Cup. The Smarts News boys rested several 1st team players and drafted in the fringe players for a chance to impress. The second string just could not get their head round manager Simon Chapple's formation though and were 2nd best to the away team for most of the 1st period. Indeed Lucarlys took the lead with a glancing header from a corner to give them a deserved lead on the half hour as the home team trudged off stunned at the break. Team Redstar made a tactical change and introduced the big boys to save the tie and within 20 minutes of the 2nd half they were 4 goals to the good. Debutant Shane Bennett on the left flank, skinned his marker and fired a fine drive across the Lucarlys keeper and inside the far post. Danny Mccann and 2 fine individual efforts from Dave Maggs restored precedings but if Team Redstar thought the game was over then they were in for a rude awakening. Lucarlys battled on and pulled a goal back when a forward caught the Redstar linesman dozing and despite being a full yard offside, despatched a nice finish into the bottom corner of Marco Sotgiu's net. The game then turned on its head when Redstar captain Dave Duff was cynically hacked down, only for referee John Love to wave play on. When the ball went out of play, Luke Borrill questioned the referee's decision in not too polite terms and was shown a straight red card. Seconds later, Matty Conroy said a similar thing to the golden haired Abba lover and he was also sent from the field of play. Everyone present at the match was stunned into disbelief. Lucarlys grabbed another goal back when the ball was played hard and low across the area for an advancing forward to dispatch but Redstar had chance after chance on the break which they did not put away. Short numbers at the back allowed the minnows to level the scores with the last kick of the game when the ball was scrambled clear but fell kindly for a man on the edge of the area to find the onion bag via a deflection for 4 - 4 and extra time. Redstar again had the better chances but also had to be alert of the swift Lucarlys breaks with the extra 2 man advantage but there were no further goals and Lucarlys 2nds marched into the next round 4 - 2 on penalty kicks. Redstar's Gary Cox, who was later to learn he had earlier broken his foot in a challenge but carried on, missed the 1st spotkick and then Bennett, riddled with cramp, turned from hero to villian when he skied his effort. Maggs and Duff both slotted their efforts away but it was to no avail. Danny Fraser was amongst the successful Lucarlys penalty kings and their Man of the Match was Chris Emerson. Team Redstar's Man of the Match was Luke O Hara.
