Redstar Smarts News Football Club took to the pitch at Lucarlys in positive mood in the Grimsby Sunday League Division 4. They were protecting a 9 month unbeaten home record and next up to try and smash through that barrier were Harriets Imperial FC. Redstar captain Dave Duff won the toss and elected to face the wind but Harriets punished his decision instantly by taking the lead in the 1st minute with Dave Maggs applying a simple finish. The wind, sleet and snow made an appearance which made flowing football almost an impossibilty but both teams tried there best to keep it on the deck. After 15 minutes Harriets doubled their lead with a neat header from that man Maggs again . Redstar keeper Marco Sotgiu palmed the ball onto the underside of the crossbar but the wind took the ball over the line and in. Both teams challenged for the ball in a firm but fair manner as Redstar looked to get back into the game but with the wind having such an adverse effect on gameplay there looked no way through. Redstar fullbacks Darren Todd and Nick Woods had their hands full but they contained the flying Harriets wingers as best they could. For Harriets, Danny Hornigold at centreback orchestrated most of his sides movement and ballplay upto the feet of his 2 frontmen whereas upfront for Redstar, John Conroy gave his all up top on his own against a back 4 who were rarely troubled. Gary Cox had a glorious chance to get Redstar back into the game when he steamed in at the far post and connected with a Woods freekick but put his effort just wide of the upright. To be fair to both teams it was just going to be a case of who took advantage of their half with the wind behind them and just when Harriets shouldve been going off at the break with at least a 3 goal lead, the flying figure of Luke Borrill evaded a couple of challenges, held his nerve in the area and buried his only chance of the 1st half with aplomb.
The halftime teamtalk from Redstar gaffer Simon Chapple was an inspiring effort as he let his lads know he had 100% confidence they would be triumphant, so with their heads held high they set about finishing the job they had started poorly. The homeside got the equaliser when Danny Mcann was fouled 25 yards from goal. As the Harriets keeper and wall worked on their organisation skills, fullback Nick Woods curled a beauty into the opposite corner of the net to stun the opposition. Team Redstar then threw the book at Harriets and went for the jugular but had to be aware of swift breaks from both flanks as they pushed men forward searching for the winner so Redstar centreback Ross Atmore had to be at his best to wrap most of his bodyparts around the ball and get rid when he was called upon. Again the wind had a decisive factor in the goal that gave Redstar all 3 points when Danny Mccann's cross was blocked. He half volleyed the ball back into the dangerzone but caught the breeze and the Harriets keeper could only palm the ball into the back of the net. Harriets had a couple of half chances to level as the game drew to a close and Gary Cox for the Smarts news men had a bullet header dissallowed for offside. Conroy senior was replaced by Conroy junior and the home side saw the remaining minutes of the contest out in a truly professional style. Gavin Johnstone just sat off in midfield allowing his midfield partner Ian Blackmore the time and space to use his head to put the ball back where it had just come from. There was still time for a bit of showboating when Borrill nutmegged Harriets substitute Craig Nuttall then spun round before repeating it again on the 2nd challenge. Both teams shook hands after what had been a sporting contest between 2 good teams. On another day, Harriets would've been out of sight at halftime but Redstar never give up the battle and handled the tornado better than their opponents on the day. Man of the match for Redstar was Gavin Johnstone.
