Redstar Smarts News Football Club ventured to Bradley Pitches to play Nicks Takeaway FC on a lovely bright morning in the Grimsby Sunday League Division 4 where they turned in a dominent display to win the game by 6 goals to nil. It really should've been more to be honest as Nicks could not keep up with the Smartsnewsmen's fine flowing football as confidence oozed through Simon Chapple's side. Nicks started brightly and took the game to their opponents and an even contest looked on the cards until an early goal for Redstar unbalanced Nicks rhythm. Luke Borrill was 1st onto a through ball and once he caught up with it there was only ever going to be 1 winner as he slotted the ball home. Nicks tried to get back into the game but Redstar had done their homework on the dangerous Ramsden and his supply was often read in advance and snuffed out by the opposition. On the odd occasions he did latch onto the ball, all too often his teammates had put just too much on the pass and the chance was gone. Redstar's leading scorer Gary Cox grabbed goal number 2 for his team when an attempted bicycle kick hit a defender and landed back to Cox. Whilst on the floor he still managaged to belt a shot goalwards which surprised the Nicks keeper as it rolled past his outstreched hand and into the bottom corner. Halftime came and Redstar were reminded about the leads they had thrown away in the last 2 games so were advised to go for the jugular. They certainly heeded the managements words and stepped up several gears after referee Elliot Heward blew his whistle to resume the game. On 60 minutes it was game over for the home side as John Conroy found himself in acres of space in the area so cut inside his marker before beating the keeper at his near post. It was all 1 way traffic as Redstar looked like scoring everytime they set a runner free and the calmness and composure in midfield saw them knock the ball around like a training session at times with Ian Blackmore picking up possesion whenever it was lost. The 4th goal for Redstar came from the penalty spot which saw fullback Nick Woods make no mistake with his kick and then Cox got in on the act again when he recieved a great little dink over the Nicks rearguard from Lee Ford to control and poke past the stranded goalkeeper. Redstar gave a rest to 3 of their troops as Darren Todd, John Conroy and Gary Cox were replaced by Daz Brett, Lee Ford and Snowy Edwards respectivly. Dave Duff and Ross Atmore played the games from their centreback position with smiles on their faces letting the ball do the work for them, whilst Danny Mccann teased and tortured the Nicks midfield into giving away frustrating fouls with his neat close control. That man Woods claimed the final goal of the contest when he flung in a freekick directly into the dangerzone which the keeper could only help palm into the onion bag, such was the accuracy. By this time Nicks were chasing shadows and a few of their players had given up the ghost. The rest of their team battled on though but Redstar keeper Marco Sotgiu only had to collect routine crosses and a couple of straight forward shots into his midrift. It was a fine performance by the Newsmen and the teamwork and bonding to a man was highly in evidence. Nick's are no where near as bad as they played today but unfortunatly for them they met a Redstar team who are having a fantastic season by their own standards and are scoring goals for fun. Man of the Match for Redstar was Gavin Johnstone who's positional sense and awareness in midfield will soon surely earn him a call up to the Scotland Squad!!!
