GUNNERS WATCH V CGB HUMBERTHERM.
In form Second division Gunners Watch marched on into the memorial cup semi final for second year running, after defeating a spirited CGB Humbertherm side.
Humbertherm currently ply there trade in the top flight. This fixture was also lucky enough to have a full quota of Officials due to other fixture being cancelled. Mr. Neil Guest being the man in middle, and ably assisted by Melvin Wilson and Trevor Allbury.
It was Gunners who started the brighter of the two sides. When a great through ball Shane Walton found ex Grimsby town trialist Bobby Lewsam, who’s quick snap shot was well saved by the Humbertherm keeper Simon Worthington.
In a well contested midfield battle, it was Gunners who was slowly getting on top with great tenacity being shown by Danny Power, Dane Roberts, Luke Marshall and livewire Shane Walton.
After Drew Mcfadyen, Lewsam and Walton all went close for gunners, from some sublime wing play from Luke Marshall on the left, it was Humbertherm who took the lead against the run of play, when after beating the offside trap the Humbertherm striker Beecroft coolly slotted home wide of the advancing Ben Hammond in the Gunners Goal.
This set back did not deter Mike Rouses troops and they came back with a vengeance, Luke Marshall twice testing the keeper with good efforts. After 20 mins Gunners came within a whisker of an equalizer when another low hard cross by Marshall saw both Mcfadyen and Walton slide in at the back post only to fail to connect by inches.
Humbertherm at this stage where finding it hard to keep Gunners at arms reach, but there early goal had given them something to hold on to and they where proving a tough nut to crack.
Dane Roberts almost leveled for Gunners but his goal bound shot was well blocked by a Humbertherm defender.
Gunners where having great success from both wings, and it was Shane Walton who produced a great piece of individual skill with a great flick with the outside of his boot, over his markers head (Dennis Bergkamp style) nipped around the defender, shot , and watched as the ball rolled agonizingly across the goal mouth and wide of the goal.
The equalizer Gunners had been threatening finally came, when Danny Power sent a great ball wide to Marshall who in turn smashed the ball across the box for the lurking Lewsam and Walton, only to see a Humbertherm defender Sam Hallet stretch out a leg and deflect the ball high into his own net with the keeper having no chance.
They say lightning doesn’t strike twice, but unbelievably Gunners took a half time advantage. When an almost carbon copy of there own goal was to repeat itself, very unfortunate for Humbertherm`s Sam Hallet. Lewsam thought he had made it three when he left a defender for dead a placed the ball in the corner, but the officials where having none of it...
The second half was much the same as the first, with gunners having a lot of possession. Humbertherm eventually made it 2-2 after beating the Gunners offside trap yet again. Humbertherm were back in it but the tough tackling back four of Jay Burton, Scott Blythe, Pete Briggs and Ricky Forest were proving more than a match for the first division outfit.
Humbertherm almost scored in their own net yet again when a defenders diving header went narrowly wide with his own keeper well beaten.
With 20 minutes left the Humbertherm resistance finally cracked when a deep cross by Lewsam found the head of Marshall who nonchalantly headed home.
Gunners sealed the game when Bobby Lewsam won a sliding tackle on the edge of the box before jinking past a defender to fire home with aplomb much to the delight of his manager and teammates and supporters alike.
Mike Rouse gave late run-outs for Mark Lodge and Darren Walton out wide and both performed admirably. With Gunners Watch running into form it will take a very good side to lower their colours at this moment in time.
Gunners wish to thank all officials who all had smashing games. What a difference having two unbiast assistant referees made. Well done fellas.
Boots Walton reporting for Gunners Watch Football Club.
