Posted 28/01/2007 10:06:49 PM | | Redstar Smarts News Football Club finally got their Memorial Cup 2nd round game against F Rodgers Raiders FC played at the 5th time of asking. Adverse weather conditions had meant the postponement of the cup tie on the previous few occasions spanning 3 different pitches but at last all was well at Lucarlys and the game kicked off in bright sunshine on a boggy yet well playable surface. Redstar had already beaten their Division 4 opposition 4-0 on the opening day of the season but Raiders have done extremely well in the cup competitions this season althought they are still waiting for a win in the league. Both teams started fairly evenly but Raiders were 1st to up the pace and enjoyed a bit more possesion than the home side. Redstar were content to bide their time and hurt Raiders on the break but neither team could raide their game enough to overcome the heavy turf. Redstar thought that they had the breakthrough when Gary Cox squared the ball to John Conroy to convert but the linesmans flag thwarted his celebrations. Speedy wing wizard Luke Borrill was next to be denied as Redstar grabbed the momentum with the wind behind them.He raced clear and chipped the onrushing Raider's keeper but his effort cannoned agonisingly off the upright and out to safety. Raiders continued to stretch the Smarts Newsmen down the flanks but could not find a way past Ross Atmore or Darren Todd. Raiders should've had a penalty when Danny Mccann appeared to trip their striker in the box but referee Barry Payne waved the appeals away. This was to be 1 of several strange decisions made by the man in the middle. The 2nd half began with Dave Duff and Gavin Johnstone at the back for Redstar commanding their positions and making some forraging attacks forward. The Redstar boys then finally got the goal their patience had deserved when a fantastic ball from Lee Ford carved the Raiders defence wide open and Luke Borrill zoomed onto it and smashed his chance into the net. Gary Cox tried his hardest to double the lead but did not get the break of the ball in the final third of the pitch. Nick Woods replaced Atmore and Simon Chapple came on for goalscorer Borrill. The final action of note came with a couple of minutes to go. Cox was sandwiched in the area and the referee blew for the foul. After some handbags, Conroy placed the ball on the spot only for Payne to award a freekick on the edge of the area despite the gaping crater a yard into the box where the incident took place. The freekick came to nothing and the whistle was blown to end the contest. Fairplay to Raiders who battled admirably but hardly dirtied Marco Sotgiu's gloves in the Redstar goal. Man of the match was awarded to Ian Blackmore who's engine always seems to carry his team through to the end.
