Posted 09/01/2007 06:39:34 PM | | Redstar Smarts News Football Club took a convoy of vehicles to ring in the New Year as they travelled to Laceby to play the village people of the RBL. For 3 quarters of the game they were in complete control but were sweating when the full time whistle finally blew. They did manage to pick up where they left off from 2006 though and also recorded back to back away wins in the process with a 3 - 2 success over the home team. Team Redstar took control from minute 1 and their crisp passing and movement left Laceby chasing shadows at times, especially in the midfield department. Danny Mccann and Ian Blackmore did the simple stuff and let the ball do the work whilst out on the right flank, Lee Ford, time and time again, dinked in the kind of balls that any forward would love to get on the end of. It seemed only a matter of time before the away side broke the deadlock and lone striker John Conroy duly obliged when he picked up a loose ball and spun around his marker before placing the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Laceby tried to keep up the pace and their fullbacks were instrumental in most things they did but rarely were Redstar goalkeeper Marco Sotgiu's gloves showing any hint of use. Time and time again Redstar broke away through midfield but the shooting boots of the lads in yellow had been left at home. That was until the sleeping giant on the left wing awoke in the form of Luke Borrill. In most games, Borrill hardly touches the ball but when he does he punishes most defenders if they can get near him. On this occasion he picked up the ball, ran at the defender, waited for the challenge and within a millisecond was away before slamming home for 2-0 before that same defender's other foot had touched the floor. The halftime whistle came but the Redstar management team of Chapple and Webster were not happy with the lack of the killer touch from their disciples and demanded the game be over as a contest as soon as possible. Redstar came out the blocks in a pretty similar vein but just could not find the net. Infact they had to wait for a penalty award to extend their lead after Borrill again sped into the box and was tripped by a clumsy Laceby challenge. Conroy scored his 2nd of the game and it was game over or so it looked. From then on it was the Gary Cox show and he ran the home side's midfield ragged. With Redstar in complete control they conceded 2 late goals as not to break the habit after a triple substitution with Daz Brett, Nick Woods and Snowy Edwards replacing Darren Todd, Ross Atmore and Lee Ford respectively. 1st Dave Duff cooly slotted past his own keeper to keep up his own goal ratio of 1.5 goals per game average. Then a few minutes later Laceby scored a cracking volley which left keeper Sotgiu stranded to make it a nervy last 10 minutes. That was all that the home team had though and the superb referee Gavin Sartain brought precedings to an end. Darren Todd was outstanding at right back, Gav Johnstone never put a foot wrong but is wasted at centrehalf but Man of the match went to Lee Ford who is growing more and more confident as each game comes.
