Redstar Smarts News Football Club entertained Laceby RBL FC at home in there first league game since their emphatic victory in the Lincs County Cup. The Smarts News men welcomed back the once a season turn up lad James Sutton who slotted straight into the right hand side of midfield and David Duff returned to the centre of defence with Snowy Edwards still out injured.  Redstar where quite short of numbers so player.gaffer Simon Chapple was added to the subs bench with Darren Todd.
The match begun with Redstar playing there tried and tested formation of 4-5-1 with Gavin Johnstone leading by example from the back which has being working very well of late. The 1st action of note was a red card for Laceby as an Ian Blackmore header was destined for the roof of the net before being tipped over by an outstretched defenders hand leaving the referee with little alternative than to give him his marching orders and point to the spot. Danny Mccann stepped up for the task but credit to the Laceby keeper who guessed the right way and saved smartly to his right. In the next  10 minutes or so the game was tough with both teams counter attacking and creating some good chances but Redstar nor Laceby were able to take advantage of any half chances that came their way. As the game progressed, Redstar begun to find their feet with John Conroy causing problems up top. Redstar eventually broke the deadlock when McCann glanced a header home after an inch perfect free kick from Redstar legend Nick Woods picked out the ginger ninja. Redstar started to dominate the game with the extra man and soon found themselves 2-0 to the good. The usually bustling Gary Cox and his opposite wing wizard Luke Borrill were having seemingly quiet  games until a Woods throw from the right was picked up by that man Cox who hit a  first time shot which took the slightest of deflections to take it over the diving Laceby keeper and into the onion bag. Redstar seemed to take their foot off the gas soon after that, allowing Laceby to get back into the game which they did when their number 9 hit a fine strike goal wards only for Redstar keeper Marco Sotgiu to push the ball around the post for a corner. The resulting flag kick came in the and caught the wind which seemed to swing it around to the back post were a Laceby player scrambled the ball home. Redstar where stunned by this and seemed to be struggling in the middle with Laceby controlling more and more of the play and creating a few chances which, thanks for some great defending, could easily have found themselves back on level terms. Redstar soon caught the pushing on away team on the counter attack though  which lead to their third goal. This came after Conroy coolly beat the offside trap, rounded the keeper and unselfishly fed the ball across to Cox to slot home. The Smarts News lads were now in full flow once again and soon found themselves handed another penalty after great play by the speedy Borrill. He bore down the left flank and advanced into the box only to be upended, giving the ref another easy penalty decision. Midfield dynamo Ian Blackmore picked the ball up but Cox was on a hat trick so Blackmore unselfishly handed his teammate the ball and he thanked him and stepped up to beat the keeper. Although it was not the best of penalty kicks, it completed his first hat trick of the season for the Redstar danger man. The home side  had plenty of chances to score more goals before half time only for the goalie to pull of some fine stops leaving Conroy, who deserved a goal, stunned. Ian Blackmore alse had a shot on the turn cannon back off the crossbar. The second half began fairly even with both teams creating chances. Laceby drew 1st blood with a glimmer of hope after their small central midfielder  connected perfectly with a cross and firing in there 2nd and without doubt the best goal of the day. Laceby’s revival did not last long though after Sutton was fouled down the left. Woods floated in yet another undefendable freekick to find McCann who pounced like a puma at the far stick to make it 5-2. With the game entering the final15 minutes, Simon Chapple replaced James Sutton and Darren Todd came on for the workhorse Ross Atmore. Redstar grabbed a 6th goal when a Cox corner was played short to Blackmore who fired a smart cross into the box. Chapple rose like a halibut at the far post but despite not connecting cleanly, he did enough to make his marker glance a flying header into the top corner and save him the job!. With only a few minutes to go, Laceby pinched a consolation goal. Their goalkeeper kicked a huge kick down field which caught the Redstar defence cold leaving a Laceby man with a one-on-one which he coolly slotted home. Soon after, the final whistle went with the score ending up 6-3 to Redstar. With the team slowly starting to play as a team again ,their promotion push may still be more than just a pipedream, especially after last season when they missed out on promotion by millimetres. There were some good performances from Sotgiu who  pulled off some great saves and Atmore and Woods showed all their experience in defence alongside Johnstone and Duff to keep the nippy Laceby players at bay. Man of the Match went to John Conroy for his continued 100% work rate up top. Despite not getting on the scoresheet, the striker had a great game. Full praise goes to young referee Elliot Heward who allowed the advantage every time then pulled everything back if there was none to be had and was superb throughout the full 90 minutes.
