Posted 10/10/2006 07:19:43 AM | | Redstar Smarts News Football Club journeyed into the unknown in the 2nd round of the Lincs County Cup Round 2 when they made the 45 mile trip to Boston Town's ground to play Sibsey based Starr Inn FC. Team Redstar were again without influential captain Dave Duff and stalwart Snowy Edwards who make up the usual centreback partnership as the spine for the club so in came Gavin Johnstone and Nick Woods with fullbacks Ross Atmore and Mark Broderick slotting into the back four jigsaw. Team Redstar also employed 1 man upfront in the shape of John Conroy with Ian Blackmore holding the ship together in the middle as the sitting player allowing Danny Mccann and Gary Cox the freedom of the park. Wingers Luke Borrill and Mark Knowles were chomping at the bit and as soon as the referee Helen Fulcher-Ward put the whistle to her lips they flew at the home side like a bull in a chinashop. Infact, within the 1st few minutes Redstar had already taken the lead when Gary Cox cut inside and out of 5 Starr Inn players after carrying the ball from the halfway line before rolling the ball across the keeper and into the far bottom corner. Redstar dominated the ball on the floor and soon had another goal disallowed for offside when Mccann strolled through but was halted in his tracks as a teammate was stood in the wrong position. The Boston area side did at least try to keep up with their younger opponents but all too often had to hoof the ball high in the air just to get rid but their 2 centrebacks, who were 48 and 52, kept the score to 1 and reached the break still well in the tie. Unfortunatly in the 2nd half, Starr Inn resorted to kicking and fouling their Grimsby based opponents for much of the final 45 minutes and were lucky to get away with only 2 yellow cards. Team Redstar's 2nd goal came from that man Cox again when he was 1st to react to a Conroy corner and slotted home through a mass of bodies. The 3rd came from from the reliable boot of leading scorer Conroy who notched his 7th goal in 7 games. With Cox getting a rough ride from some of his less skilled opponents, he was substituted and on came player/gaffer Simon Chapple. It was the big man who started the move for the 4th goal. Johnstone pinged a ball upto Chapple who brought the ball down on his right foot sublimly before turning and sending Conroy clean through. His 1st shot was parried wide but Conroy picked the rebound up and fired across goal then thanked the goalkeeper for fumbling the ball into his own net. Slack marking from a corner allowed Inn to bury a header to reduce the deficit but the Smarts News men had the final say when Borrill, who has had a quiet season so far by his standards, whizzed past a couple of players before slamming home the ball at the keepers near post. The final 10 minutes were spent with Redstar going through the motions as Starr Inn were out on their feet. Darren Todd replaced Broderick at fullback but had little to do and only broke into a sweat when sweeping up Blackmores loose passes. So Redstar join most of the Grimsby based clubs that have progressed into the next round where they face a much tougher test against the Auld South Yorkshire. Lets hope this team gives a bit more respect out and do not end up trying to mame the player rather than play the ball. Man of the match for Redstar was Nick Woods.
