Posted 19/03/2008 07:39:15 AM | | The Cricketers and Tilted Barrel met at Hereford School for the third week on the trot this time in the Lincs Cup. With Barrel having inflicted heavy defeats on The Cricks in the previous two weeks Cricks certainly had a point to prove but despite holding the lead on this occasion well into the second half, Barrel eventually ran out 3-1 winners. Adam Phillips became the third different keeper to appear between the sticks for Cricks in the 3 games and gave an excellent performance. Unlike the previous two games it was Cricks who were the better team in the first half and Danny Hornigold was unlucky to see his long-range effort fly just wide. Chas Vivins then played a quick free-kick to Danny Grant whose 25 yard effort was well held by the Barrel keeper. Cricks deservedly took the lead when Simon Treacher won a towering header in the centre of the park and the ball found its way to Lee Darwood who outpaced a defender and struck a great half-volley past the Barrel keeper. Phillips in the Cricks goal was rarely troubled in the first half but showed a safe pair of hand when called upon. Cricks did have a let off just before half-time when Barrel struck the crossbar but at half-time Cricks still had their slender lead. The expected early onslaught from Barrel in the second half failed to materialise and for the early part of the half Cricks looked the more likely to score. However as the half wore on Barrel began to get more into the game and thought they'd equalised when the ball was headed home from close range, but the flag was up and the goal was disallowed for offside. The equaliser came soon after though from the penalty spot. Cricks felt that Hornigold had been fouled in the area but it was Paul Quickfalls subsequent foul on a Barrel player which was punished and the spot kick gave Phillips no chance and the scores were level. Barrel were now on top and it needed some excellent saves from Phillips to keep the scores level including one amazing save where he appeared to claw the ball away on the ground when it appeared beyond him and a certain goal. Barrel took the lead when their right winger did well on the ball and pulled the ball back into the area when a well struck effort but Barrel ahead. Darwood then had a glorious chance to equalise when presented with a free header in the box but he could only glance the ball wide with the goal gaping. With Cricks pushing men forward Barrel caught them on the break and a fine individual goal made the game safe at 3-1. Danny Grant had a late chance to pull a goal back for Cricks but could only fire weakly at the keeper when in on goal. Ref Lee Walsh controlled the game well and managed to calm things down when they got a bit heated in the second half without having to resort to using his cards.
