CRICKS SHOT DOWN BY SOLITARY GUNNERS STRIKE
The current top 2 in Division 3 met at Hereford School when The Cricketers entertained table topping Gunners Watch and in an entertaining match it was Gunners who took the points thanks to a solitary strike by Bobby Lewsam. Cricks though were very unfortunate to come away from the game empty handed. For the second week in a row Cricks could only muster a bare eleven players, whilst Gunners had a full complement of substitutes and supporters down.

Mick Rouse's early morning fry-up had the necessary effect as Gunners started brightest and should have taken the lead inside the first couple of minutes. Good work down the left wing saw the ball played into the area but the usually reliable Lewsam failed to control the ball in front of goal and the danger was cleared. Danny Hornigold hit a good 30 yard effort just over and then Jimmy Potter also fired over after good work from Paul Mawer. Steve Smith then had Cricks best chance of the match when he beat the Gunners offside trap. With Freeman in the Gunners goal off his line Smith attempted to lob him but only managed a weak effort which Freeman gathered comfortably. Gunners then took the lead when the Cricks defence gifted them possession. The ball was played to Lewsam who held off the attentions of two Cricks defenders and struck the ball across Hodgson in Cricks goal with the ball hitting the far post as it entered the net. Lee Darwood then did well to get a shot on goal but his effort went agonisingly wide with the keeper beaten.

Lewsam nearly extended Gunners lead early in the second half but his attempted lob of Hogdson from a tight angle struck the crossbar and rebounded to safety. Jamie Humberston then connected perfectly with a Cricks corner but a combination of defender and keeper saw his goalbound effort blocked. Cricks were having the better of the play and Freeman in the Gunners goal made a number of excellent saves to deny Cricks a deserved equaliser. Firstly he did well to block a powerfull shot from Darwood and then Smith hit a great shot on the turn which brought another good save. Hodgson in the Cricks goal then proved what an excellent keeper he is too when he bravely dived at the feet of a Gunners forward to block a certain goal. Paul Mawer then brought another flying save from Freeman who turned away his well struck 25 yarder which seemed destined for the top corner. Centre half Simon Treacher pushed forward late in the game but they were unable to grab the equaliser their performance deserved.

The game was, for the most, played in an excellent spirit and ref Ray Braithwaite had a good game with the whistle.

I was convinced that their keeper was called Ben Freeman but when Mick corrected me I emailed Mike Taylor who was doing the reports at the time and changed it.

Mix 'em both up and you've probably got it about right! Not sure about being a classic though Michael and from my recollection a draw would have been a fair result! Vaguely recall you and Boots saying then same as we came off at FT but a good tussle all the same

anyone know who danny hornigold plays for now?

there`s 2 of em scott...the younger one signed for the val last i heard and the older one is plying his trade in div4 i think at classic signs and stally on a saturday....sure someone will correct me if im wrong
