Match report on Cricketers v Gunners Watch F.C
League leaders Gunners Watch locked horns with second placed Cricketers F.C. at Hereford School and consolidated their position at the top of div 3 in a tightly fought, competitive match, eventually running out 1-0 victors.
Gunners almost got off to a dream start when Gavin Schofield skipped past his marker in the first minute before squaring to the unmarked Lewsam, and from 2 yards out Lewsam somehow failed to make Cricketers pay, a mighty let off for the Cricks. The game was fast and furious with little to choose between the two sides but on 15 mins Cricks should have scored their striker choosing to try and lob Ben Hammond in the Gunners goal but fluffed it. Cricks were seeing plenty of the ball but where met by a resilient, tough tackling, no nonsense Gunners side with defenders Powers, Briggs and Hutterby matching Cricks all the way.
Cricks were beginning to get increasingly frustrated at not being able to make inroads against a confident Gunners outfit whose midfield trio of Maddocks Clarke and Walton where breaking down the cricks nice passing build up play, and they were reduced to long range efforts as they couldn’t find the key to unlock the Gunners rearguard.
10 minutes from half time saw Gunners strike like a cobra, a sweeping move at pace saw Clark, Stark, Maddocks and Schofield all involved with the latter releasing Bobby Lewsam on the right hand side of the box, Bobby fired in a low hard drive back across the keeper to see his shot fly into the net via the post. The supporters on the line erupted, knowing that Gunners had never lost once going in front.
Early in the second half Gunners own ‘golden balls’ Bobby Lewsam was desperately unlucky not to increase the lead when after leaving defended Simon Treacher toiling in his wake, his attempted cheeky lob from almost the by-line, crashed against the cross bar. McKenzie then found Shane Walton who sent a fizzler flying goal wards unfortunately straight down the keeper’s throat. Gunners introduced Mcfadyen and Bloomfield to try and get a foot on the ball as gunners were being over run, this had a good effect. Schofield had a burst through the cricks defence only to be denied by brave keeping.
One piece of Gunners superb flowing football was a six man, one touch move which ended unfortunately with Lewsam rising like a tin of salmon, instead of a salmon with a gaping goal at his mercy he managed to fluff it, in the end it wasn’t Bobby’s day
A great save by Ben Hammond near the end was the best Cricks could muster, although plenty of possession, they lacked that killer instinct, unlike their illustrious opponents. Ray Braithwaite had a fine game with the whistle, letting the game flow probably the best ref we have had all season well done Ray. This is not the best Gunners have played this season wasting far too many balls but a win when your not playing great does wonders for confidence last year Gunners would of caved and maybe even lost there way in this encounter. Man of the match for Gunners was Pete Briggs who was solid at the back.
